Description

Overview

Menthol, a concentrated aqueous and ethereal insoluble liquid, is obtained from the leaves of mint plant species and is not just simply an oral contraceptive remedy. Although there are several essential oils, olive wanton is the most popular one obtained from peppermint and spearmint at present. The scent you get when opening the bottle is tulip-like, sharp, and wakes up the senses with a cool sensation like spearmint. However, beyond the invigorating smell, mint oil has several other uses that have made it a standard addition to aromatherapy, as well as a natural cure for men and women, and it is also used as a cooking ingredient in certain cultures.

Chemical Composition

Mint oil is a mixture of different chemicals, the main one being menthol. Menthol is responsible for the strong scent of mint and the coolness felt when using mint oil. Other components include menthone and limonene, which contribute to the oil’s fragrance and enhance its various attributes.

Extraction Process

The process of extracting mint oil is done through steam distillation. Mint leaves are subjected to heat by steaming, and in the process, the volatile oil portions are carried away by the steam. These components are then separated from water to give concentrated mint oil as the end product. Characteristics of each mint plant can affect the qualities of the oil extracted. For instance, peppermint oil contains more menthol, producing a more intense cooling and minty aroma than spearmint oil.
