Description

Overview

Citronella oil is derived from the leaves of Cymbopogon nardus, Cymbopogon winterianus, and other related species indigenous to Southeast Asia. However, it is not only famous for repelling mosquitoes and other insects during the hot summer season. Known for protecting outdoor activities, citronella oil has many unexpected conveniences.

Extraction Process

The extraction process used in citronella production is steam distillation. The green leaves of the Cymbopogon plant are heated by steam, which carries the volatile oil components. These components are then extracted from the water to produce citronella oil in a condensed form. It is noteworthy that the choice of specific Cymbopogon species for extraction may cause differences in the properties of the obtained oil. Citronella, the primary active ingredient, is mostly found within the oil in very high proportions and has alcohol-like properties.

Mechanism of Action

Citronella interferes with insects’ chemoreceptors, making it challenging for them to find and attack humans. This provides an effective shield against mosquitoes and reduces the risk of contracting diseases from them.
